The rules of the road

Before you rebook any rental car

Four things that apply to every rental company and booking site.

Pay later usually costs nothing to cancel

Most rental companies let you reserve a car and pay at the counter. A pay-later reservation like that usually cancels without a fee as long as you cancel before pickup, which makes it the easiest booking to replace with a cheaper one. Some companies ask for a card to hold certain cars or promotions, and those can carry a fee close to pickup. The exact terms are on your confirmation.

Prepaid rates carry timing fees

A prepaid or Pay Now rate is cheaper up front but costs money to cancel, and the fee usually grows as pickup gets closer: often one amount more than 24 hours out and a larger one inside 24 hours. Subtract that fee from the saving before you rebook. A $60 drop is worth nothing if cancelling costs $100. Some companies let you change a prepaid booking to the lower rate instead.

Book the new one first, then cancel

A reservation you already have doesn't get cheaper on its own when rates fall. The dependable way to take a lower price is usually a new booking, and the order matters: book and confirm the new rate first, then cancel the original. Cars sell out, especially at busy airports, and a cancelled reservation may not be reinstated. Cancel the original once the new one is confirmed.

Count the perks, not just the price

A lower price on a different site can cost you something the original booking included. Costco Travel rentals, for example, include an additional driver at no extra charge at participating US Alamo, Avis, Budget and Enterprise locations; rebook the same car elsewhere and you pay for that driver again. Add your loyalty number and any member discount to the new booking before you count the saving.
